Vintage press photo dated from 1952, features fan dancer Sally Rand posing with her milking contest partner.. Her opponent was Martin Zook, the manager of Memphis’ long-running 'MID-SOUTH FAIR'.. No word on who won the contest. But it was a favorite publicity stunt Ms. Rand (who grew up on a farm) used to boost attendance for her 16-Girl Revue, which ran for 10 consecutive days at the Fair..

Billed here as "The Flame Of Trinidad", Rita was actually born and raised in South Philadelphia, PA.. One of 13 children, she dropped out of high school to work for a travelling carnival, where she sold popcorn.. By the early 40’s, she was dancing annually in the "Girlie-Show" tents of the James E. Strates company.. During the Winter months, she would also travel the Burlesque theatre circuit. But 1952 was the only instance where she would work for the ‘Royal American Shows’ travelling show, as seen here..
